Are our clothes destroying the planet?
We are pleased to invite you to an online panel entitled "Are our clothes destroying the planet?" which will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, starting at 6 p.m.
We all wear clothes every day, however, do we rarely think about the consequences that clothes have on our environment?
The quantity of clothes bought in Serbia is 80,000 tons per year, while its quality and composition are often questioned. In order for clothes to be favorable for customers, and cost-effective for manufacturers, they are made of cheap materials - primarily plastic (polyester), and generally have a short shelf life. Such clothes are equally harmful to the Planet - such as a plastic bottle or bag.
Topics to be raised during the discussion:
- How much do we buy clothes and what is its quality?
- What does the life cycle of our clothes look like - from the manufacturer to the landfill?
- Does the composition of clothing harm our health and the health of the environment?
- How much does clothing accelerate the effects of climate change?
- Clothing and resources: Does fast fashion have an alternative?
Panel participants:
- prof. Dr. Miodrag Stojković - researcher at the Institute of Human Genetics, Newcastle University
- Ivana Jovčić - Executive Director of the Center for Environmental Improvement
- prof. dr Vladimir Đurđević - climatologist, associate professor in the group for meteorology, Faculty of Physics, University of Belgrade
